Subsequently, question is, Are dual amps any good?
This amp is great. It puts out clean and consistant power and runs extremely quiet and cool. Had never tried any products from Dual but I was pleasantly surprised by this amp. Would recommend this amp highly as a good entry level addtion to your sound system.
Do amps really make a difference?
With amps, the sound, as opposed to notes, is the first thing to go. A great amp strips away the artifice of sound reproduction and lets more of the music shine through. Vacuum tube amplifiers measure and sound different, some say better, some say worse than solid-state amps, but again they both play the same notes.
No, amplifiers don't improve sound quality. They just increase the signals to required levels. However if amplifiers have equaliser or other signal processing facility, they can make it sound different and possibly more suitable for listening pleasure. But again that is the work of signal processing part of amplifier.
Tube amps are expensive because they adopt pre and power tubes as their primary amplification source. Each tube costs roughly $50 and can have up to 4 of them within a single unit. Secondly, these amps have more expensive components, larger cases, and more complex circuitry than solid-state amps.

Everyone has a different opinion on this. If it were a 2 channel system, one rule of thumb is to spend 30% on amp, 30% on speakers and 30% on source. So, you could say that you need to spend about the same on the front pair as the amp.
While less efficient than Class B, it remains much more efficient than Class A, and is generally considered a good compromise between the two amongst more traditional amplifier topologies. ... The primary benefit to this method is efficiency – 85-90% operating efficiencies are common.
Basically, you'll want an amp with good sound quality that can give a decent amount of power. For most applications, I recommend 50W RMS per channel minimum. You'll also want the ability to block distortion-causing bass by using high-pass crossovers on your tweeters or midrange speakers.
The speakers should be rated for the same or MORE power than the amp, otherwise you risk overdriving them which can easily damage them.
A 4 channel amplifier is a stereo amplifier with 2 more channels built in to boost (amplify) weak input signals to a higher voltage signal. This drives speaker voice coils to move the speaker cone and produce sound.

Tube amps require a few more components such as voltage transformers (several per tube) that contain heavy magnets. Because of this added weight the chassis that the components are fastened to are made out of steel or other heavy metals for sturdiness as opposed to aluminum like in solid state amps.
Tubes, like analog recordings, have a more full-bodied sound than transistor gear. There's a "roundness" to tube sound that solid-state gear never equals. Tubes are less forgiving about mismatches, so to get the best out of a tube amp it must be used with just the right speaker.
